Richard Shipley b. 1973

Richard Shipley is a Bristol based abstract painter and mural artist, originally from York. His artistic process began in his early teens when graffiti art came to the UK. Richard’s work has evolved from the graffiti lettering of the 1980’s to pure abstract forms, inspired by theories of time and memory.

In 2012, he was nominated for an Artaq Urban Art Award for his abstract murals. Arts writer Kristina Lewis wrote “Richard Shipley is a veritable master of authentic contemporary visual abstraction; the exquisitely emotive and provocative qualities of his work, immerse the viewer in a captivating and often cathartic journey, whilst at the lightest stroke, one relinquishes conditioned reticence with pure abandonment, and thus becomes lost to the dynamic enchantment of a refined and inimitable, abstract aesthetic. ”

Richard Shipley has exhibited in group shows in Europe and has artwork in private collections around the world, with a piece permanently hanging in the United Nations Office, Geneva.
